I can't help the way I feel! Or can I?

God made us so wonderfully, so uniquely and so beautifully complex! He gave us the
pleasure of emotions, which can definitely be complex. Emotions allow us to feel,
to be joyful, to connect with others, to be compassionate, to love. They also give
opportunities to feel anger, hurt, rejection, jealousy, fear and depression.
Our emotions can take us the wrong direction if we allow them to. How often do we
get angry over something that was really nothing? How often have we been afraid of
something, and it turned out to be nothing to fear? People say, “I can’t help the way I
feel!” Our emotions can take over if we allow them to or we can choose to direct them
instead. I like how author Maureen Anderson words it. She asks, “Are you Spirit led or
are you emotionally driven?” We cannot always trust our emotions, but we can trust the
Spirit of God who leads us and guides us into all truth.
Medical science and psychologist confirm that our thoughts directly affect our emotions
and physical body. Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our
thoughts direct our emotions! That’s why God tells us to think about His ways and His
perspective! We are to bring every thought that is contrary to God’s Word and capture
it, and replace it with the truth. We are to think about things that are true. So often,
we get carried away with our own opinions and thoughts and they aren’t based on the
truth. They lead and direct our emotions. So, get God’s perspective and choose to be
led by the truth rather than emotions. And, never forget that God is for you and no
matter how difficult your situation is, He can and will turn everything around for good to
you, who love God and are called according to His purpose. Put your hope in God and
trust Him. Get God’s perspective!
2 Corinthians 10:5 (MSG)
5 We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down
barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and
impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.
Colossians 3:2 (MSG)
2 Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you.
Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See
things from his perspective.
Colossians 3:2 (NIV)
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true,
and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that
are excellent and worthy of praise.
